From Grey to Green.
Bucharest – yesterday, today and tomorrow
About the project
January, 2010
|
Grey to Green initiative intends to expand the city’s green infrastructure, to stop the spread of invasive plants, to restore the native vegetation, to protect sensitive natural areas.
The project, which is now in progress at Lauder-Reut High School, is based on the idea of ecological modernisation, where Bucharest is to develop towards a greener society, guided with the principles of ecology for a better and safer environment.

This project includes the opportunity of cooperation between teachers and students in order to become more responsible about the ecological and social environment. History, environmental education, traditions and ecology are the main topics of the project.
The project started in November 2009, with the already-existent recycling program - collecting paper, during all school year, in which we involved the students, their parents as well as the teachers. We also collaborate with AZIMUT ECOTurism Association in different activities. One of them was discovering REAL Bucharest in the project „CENTRAL SUBURBIA"). The students from 10th grade visited different places of Bucharest and took a lot of photos. We prepared an exhibition in January 2010 – during ECOWeek.
In December 2009, a documentary film: Bucharest-a city of contrasts, made by a group of students from The Media University, which contain scenes from all our ECO activies during the project.
In January 2010, our school sent an official request to the Mayor of Bucharest for getting a small “grey” area in Bucharest in order for our students to „transform“ it into a green area (cleanning, planting trees, flowers, etc).

We link the Hebrew holiday, TuBishvat (The New Year of the Trees) with an annual “Ecology Week” during the same period of time. This year, we celebrated TuBishvat in the last week of January. „The ECO WEEK“ came to life due to the project „ Grey to Green“ and we intend to turn it into a tradition.
